Pada postingan sebelum ini kita telah mengenal jenis-jenis skalar, yang merupakan salah satu komponen fundamental dalam sistem kelistrikan/ elektronika.
Sekarang kita akan meninjau salah satu komponen lain yang tak kalah pentingnya dengan saklar, yaitu kawat penghantar atau konduktor (wire and cable). Fungsi kawat penghantar adalah untuk menghantarkan arus listrik dari satu titik ke titik yang lain dalam suatu rangkaian elektronika atau dalam suatu sistem jaringan listrik.
Bahan konduktor yang biasa digunakan sebagai kawat penghantar adalah yang terbuat dari TEMBAGA; tetapi bisa juga ALUMINIUM atau logam lain.
Ditinjau dari segi cara kawat penghantar difabrikasikan, terdapat dua jenis, yaitu kawat tunggal (SOLID WIRE) dan kawat majemuk atau kawat serabut (STRANDED WIRE)yang dianyam bersama.
Kawat tunggal bersifat kaku sehingga bisa dibengkokkan dan bertahan bentuknya. Sedangkan kawat serabut bersifat lunak dan apabila dibengkokkan tak akan bertahan bentuknya.
Karena fungsi utama kawat penghantar adalah untuk menghantarkan arus listrik, maka rating suatu kawat penghantar adalah kemampuannya untuk menghantarkan arus listrik.
Kemampuan menghantarkan arus listrik berbanding lurus dengan ukuran diameter kawat. Semakin besar diameter akan semakin besar arus yang dapat dihantarkan.
Salah satu standard untuk penghantar adalah American Wire Gauge (AWG)dan Metric Wire Gauge (MWG). Makin besar nilai ukuran AWG akan semakin kecil ukuran diameter penghantar; tetapi sebaliknya semakin besar nilai MWG akan semakin besar pula nilai ukuran diameter penghantar.

Sebagaimana telah disebutkan, makin besar nilai ukuran kawat penghantar akan semakin besar nilai arus yang dapat dihantarkan. Selanjutnya ketika arus dihantarkan akan terjadi penurunan tegangan listrik (voltage-drop) pada penghantar; dan faktor ini penting untuk diperhatikan. Tabel di bawah ini dapat dijadikan pedoman juga untuk memilih kawat penghantar.
Untuk keperluan pembuatan prototipe atau dalam penggunaan breadboard elektronika, ukuran penghantar 20 atau 22 AWG sudah memadai. Untuk keperluan listrik rumah tangga biasanya 14 atau 16 AWG.
WARNA KABEL
Pentingkah warna kabel? Penting, terutama sekali ketika bekerja dengan banyak kabel yang masing-masingnya dihubungkan dengan titik-titik yang berbeda. Dengan warna kabel yang berbeda akan memudahkan proses penyambungan antara satu bagian dengan bagian rangkaian yang lain atau dengan komponen-komponen tertentu. Hal ini dapat diamati pada perkabelan kendaraan sebagai contoh.
